Congratulations and thank you to all of the social detectives and super flexible thinkers who joined us this year for our 3rd annual “SOCIAL THINKING” summer camps! This summer our office was filled with 5 groups, 5 different sets of curriculum, and 5 bunches of kids that gained social thinking communication skills. The few weeks between the last camp and school starting were definitely too quiet around the clinic! The camps are based on Michelle Garcia Winner’s ‘Social Thinking’ curriculum and include vocabulary from multiple resources she and her colleagues have created. The kids participated in a variety of fun activities to target things such as ‘Whole Body Listening,’ using their social tools (e.g., their eyes, ears, brain, and heart), thinking with our eyes, perspective taking, and understanding thoughts and feelings. We introduced community outings this year to practice targeted skills by participating in tours at the Reno Ace’s stadium and Kimmie Candy Company. Other camp favorites from this year included the Amazing Race game, watching the Lego Movie, Jello brains, and building friend files to help learn more about fellow campers! Plans are already underway for next summer (e.g., dates will be set in late winter!)….and the STG staff is busy planning weekly/monthly drop-in Social Thinking groups to start mid to late September!!
Here are a few inspiring parent testimonials:
“Social camp was very helpful for my daughter. It gave her tools to use to make friends and think about others.”
“Social Thinking camp was awesome! Of all the fun things we have done this summer, my daughter was the most comfortable in her own skin during that week.”
“This group of ladies knows exactly where to help and do a great job doing it!”
“I really love the experience they are given. I like the hours, the dates, and he really enjoyed the outing. The leaders are wonderful. I really enjoyed the curriculum of Super Flex, it is teaching with fun!”
